Pet of the month for March goes to this cutie, Monkey!
Monkey first came to see us in 2022 as his owner noted he was having weird episodes where he would go stiff for a few moments, before his legs would go wobbly from underneath him. During these episodes he was also known to lose control of his bladder.
On physical exam Dr Raj didn’t note any abnormalities but could not rule out seizure activity. Options were discussed & his owner elected to have bloods sent away for a full seizure panel, looking for possible causes.
Once his results were back, it was found that he tested negative for all. Unfortunately for Monkey, he had to visit Murdoch Emergency Vet while we awaited his results due to a significant seizure. It was decided to start him on anti-seizure meds immediately.
Monkey has been on his seizure meds for almost 4yrs now & so far, he is being well managed. He does have a couple seizures each year, but he recovers well from them. The good thing is we have many additional options of drugs that can be added into Monkey’s daily dose of Pexion- if he were to get worse.
Further diagnostics would involve CT imaging to assess any abnormalities of the brain.
Seizures can be very scary for not only our furry family members, but for us to witness too. If this ever happens to your pet, please head directly to your nearest emergency centre.
Monkey has had a big couple of years, but even more recently was diagnosed with a splenic mass when he attended WAVES emergency vet in January. He came in to see Dr Raj, who had a complete Abdominal ultrasound performed to do a more thorough investigation. From this is was recommended he had his spleen removed, due to the size of the mass, to prevent a life-threatening rupture in the future.
Surgery went great and Monkey made a full recovery; he is so lucky to have his family who takes the very best care of him & makes sure he gets his meds every day.
