PET OF THE MONTH- DECEMBER 2025

Pet of the month for December goes to Andre!!

This lovely boy has been a regular patient of ours as he has a disease called Cushings, a medical condition caused by an excess of the hormone cortisol, leading to symptoms like weight gain, a rounded face, and fragile skin.

Back in October, Andre came to visit us because he was not feeling the best. He wasn’t wanting to eat or drink and seemed to be in discomfort while moving around. On physical examination it was noted that he was very sore/tense in the abdominal area- so bloods and ultrasound was recommended. His bloods didn’t show any major changes; however, his ultrasound showed some inflammation of his colonic wall and a small nodular mass on his spleen. It was recommended that he has a repeat scan to make sure the splenic mass hasn’t changed in shape/size.

Andre came back at the end of last month for his repeat scan, which showed the good news that it hadn’t change at all. However, over time it can change and become life threatening if it was to rupture. He would essentially be bleeding out into his abdominal cavity. The option was given to his mum, to remove his spleen before this happens.

His splenectomy was performed last week and the surgery went exactly how we had hoped. He recovered very well and so far, has been doing great at home.

We would love to thank his mum for being the best pet parent, he is one lucky boy
