PET OF THE MONTH- OCTOBER 2025

Pet of the month for October goes to this little man, Winston!

Winston originally came to visit us back in August as his family noticed that he was passing blood in his urine, he was not however straining to pass the urine. Dr Raj recommended sending off a urine sample to find out the cause- unfortunately we were not able to collect any in clinic, so his family was tasked to collect some at home.

Thankfully, they were able to collect it the next day- so off it was sent to the laboratory for testing. His urine results came back the following day and unfortunately occasional calcium oxalate crystals were noted. Calcium oxalate crystals form when calcium and oxalate combine in the urine, often leading to kidney and bladder stones, the most common type of stone.

For Winston, this means he would need to go under general anaesthetic and have a Cystotomy, a surgical procedure to create an incision in the wall of the urinary bladder. It is commonly performed in veterinary medicine to remove bladder stones.

Winston was very brave and his procedure went just as we had hoped. 3 stones were removed in total. He recovered well and you wouldn’t even know he had the invasive procedure completed.

Going forward, he will need to be on a special urinary diet to prevent further stones from forming. As well as routine urine testing to make sure no further stones are present.

We would love to thank his mum and dad for doing the very best for him- he is one lucky boy
