PET OF THE MONTH- JULY 2025!

Pet of the month for July goes to this cutie, Arya!

Arya first visited our clinic back in April for a second opinion on a very large lump she had on her left flank. She had seen a previous vet in January who dispensed medications to bring down the inflammation, as well as performed X-rays, an Ultrasound & took an FNA sample of the area to send off to the lab- all came back totally normal.

Arya was again sent home with medications, to see if the lump would reduce in size- further scans were also recommended to determine the cause of the lump. Her owner decided to go with conservative treatment for the moment- to see if medications would be enough. Our vets followed up a week later and her owner was happy to report that the lump had reduced in size.

Fast forward to the end of June, Arya was back at the clinic for the same lump. This time a repeat ultrasound was strongly recommended, so we could get to the bottom of this lump. Arya lives on a property, so our main cause for concern was a potential grass seed had penetrated her flank. Grass seeds will burrow deep in the body and can cause massive trauma to the body.

An ultrasound was scheduled in and on exam two fluid filled pockets were located and from one pocket was linked to a draining track. These draining tracks usually indicate that some form of foreign material has been migrating through the body. Due to the location of the draining track, Arya was referred to a specialist centre for further imaging to locate the foreign material.

A CT scan was performed and the foreign material was located near her lumbar spine! The specialist then removed the foreign material under the guidance of ultrasound. The foreign material tuned out be a grass seed!! Everything went very well and she was left with a surgical wound only 1cm in length.

Arya is such a lucky girl as the grass seed could have travelled further and caused her some major complications due to the location it ended up. We would love to thank her dad for trusting us with her care and following all of our recommendations.
