PET OF THE MONTH - APRIL 2025

Pet of the month for April 2025 goes to this lovely lady- 9yr old Hadley!

Hadley came to our clinic as her owner was concerned about some lumps that he noticed on her abdomen. Dr Raj was the vet that saw her for this appointment and straight away was concerned that she in fact had Mammary Gland tumours. Mammary Gland tumours are a common canine cancer, mostly found on unsterilised females, often presenting as lumps or masses along the mammary chain. Early detection and treatment, meaning surgical removal, is crucial in the prognosis of these patients.

During the initial consultation, Dr Raj was informed that Hadley had in fact had an “ovary-sparing spay” at another vet when she was younger. This involves removing the uterus and cervix while leaving the ovaries intact, sterilizing the dog but preserving natural hormones.

Unfortunately, this means that Hadley was still at risk for developing Mammary Gland tumors, and at the age of 9, she’s had to go through a very large and invasive procedure to remove all of the tumors present.

She is almost 2 weeks post operation and is doing very well- she will require close monitoring for the remainder of her life, to make sure we keep her as comfortable as possible.

We would love to thank her family for getting her in for a visit as soon as they noticed these lumps and getting her treatment.

**desexing of our pet’s is extremely important to reduce/eliminate the risk of major health issues. Pyometra, testicular cancer and prostate cancer are just some of the other health risks involved with leaving our pets unsterilized. If you wish to chat more about this, please call the clinic and speak to one of our wonderful nurses**
