PET OF THE MONTH - JUNE 2024

Pet of the month for June goes to this beautiful boy Basil.

Basil is a frequent patient of ours as he comes in for regular treatment of his arthritis, medications for his heart condition and liver supplements also soft tissue cancer of the left hind leg, he now has another medication to add to his pack.

Basil has been recently diagnosed with Cushing's disease. Cushing diseases is a hormonal disease that is caused in cats and dogs this is medically known as Hyperadrenocorticism broken down into’ hyper’ (over active) ‘Adreno’ (adrenal gland) ‘corticism’ (outer part of the cortex of the adrenal gland). The adrenal glands are located just above the kidneys and this disease causes them to be way over active which causes the following symptoms:

  • Panting
  • Weight loss
  • Potbelly appearance
  • Thin skin
  • Hair loss
  • Skin infections

Basil got his diagnoses after we completed an abdominal ultrasound and a blood test called a Low-dose Dexamethasone Suppression Test.

Cushing’s was then confirmed for Basil, he is now on medications to help decrease his cortisol production. He also comes in for blood test every 4 months to check that his medication is doing its job!

We would like to thank Basil’s mum Jemma for taking such brilliant care of him and keeping up with his ongoing treatments.
