PET OF THE MONTH - APRIL 2024

Pet of the month for April goes to these two beautiful boys Deacon and Frankie.

Both Deacon & Frankie visited our clinic one week apart last month, due to both of them being unable to urinate. When male cats become “blocked” (unable to pass urine due to urethral obstruction), they are unable to pass urine- causing their bladders to become extremely full. This can become fatal for our feline boys, as the bladder can burst, or due to the kidneys not being able to excrete urine- toxic waste can build up in their blood stream.

This can occur when the cat is very stressed or have been stressed over a long period of time, things that can cause stress in cats include:

  • Moving houses
  • Unfamiliar people in the house or new additions to the family like babies
  • Changes in their routine or the family’s routine
  • Vet visits or grooming visits

Lucky for both these boys, their parents were on top of it & brought them down to get checked over. Both were booked in to have a urinary catheter placed to unblock their urethra & then spent 3 days in hospital for monitoring. During this time, they are on IV fluids to help flush the toxic waste out of their system, as well as keep them hydrated. They will receive daily medications to assist with the continued passing of urine, these medications will be continued at home.

The first 24-48 hours is crucial for these patients after they have had their catheter removed, as even after all the treatment given- they can block up again. Both Deacon & Frankie have had no relapses since & will have to continue on a special urinary diet & medications for the rest of their life, to prevent further episodes.

We would like to thank both their parents for being so on top of their boys care & getting them straight down to the clinic. They are so lucky to have you!
