Pet of the month for March goes to this little cutie Uluru. Uluru came in as her owners noticed that her eye was quite red and swollen and there was something that popped out. Dr Raj and Dr Hali both examined Uluru and noted that it was in fact a cherry eye! This is very rare in cats unlike in dogs.
Cherry eye is a prolapse of tear gland of third eyelid. This produces a very red lump in the inside corner of the eye, or eyes, if both are affected. This is likely where the condition "cherry" eye gets its name
The cause of cherry eye is not fully known, but thought to be a weakness in the eyelid tissue that normally holds the gland in place. The treatment of cherry eye consists of replacing the gland back to its original position by performing a very tricky eye surgery.
Uluru was admitted in to have the surgery to repair the cherry eye. He is now home and fully recovered. We would like to thank his owners for taking very good care of him.
